How many AI search prompts should your brand monitor?
Answer four quick questions — we'll size your monitoring plan and show exactly how each factor drives the number.
Most small local businesses should start with 20–80 prompts, while SaaS and multi-market brands often need 150–500+. The right number depends on your site type, buyers, markets, services, competitors and monitoring frequency.

Typical AI prompt tracking ranges by business type
| Business type | Starter range | Serious range | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local service, one area | 20–60 | 80–150 | services + locations + "near me" prompts |
| Multi-location local business | 80–250 | 300–700 | services × cities / suburbs |
| SaaS, single market | 50–150 | 200–500 | features, use cases, alternatives |
| SaaS, multi-market | 150–500 | 500–1,500 | buyers × countries × competitors |
| Ecommerce | 200–1,000 | 1,000+ | product categories + buying stages |
| Publisher / content site | 100–500 | 500+ | topics + freshness + authority coverage |
| Professional / B2B services | 40–120 | 150–400 | services × industries × trust prompts |
| Manufacturer / wholesale | 60–200 | 250–600 | product lines × specs × buyer + distributor prompts |
How the calculation works
The number of AI prompts you should monitor comes from six inputs: your site type, your buyers, your markets or service areas, your intent types, the AI engines you check, and how often you re-scan.
The core formula is: core topics (services, categories or topic clusters) × geographic reach (service areas for local businesses, or markets × languages for global brands) × intent types (informational, commercial, comparison, pricing, local, trust, alternatives) × a depth factor for how thorough you want to be.
That produces three tiers - a minimum for basic visibility, a recommended plan that covers services, locations, buyer intent and competitors, and a deep plan for aggressive multi-location or competitor coverage.
Do locations matter for AI prompt tracking?
Yes, when the buyer's answer changes by place. Local businesses should track prompts by service area or city, such as "bathroom renovations Dural" or "builder near me." Global SaaS brands may use countries or languages instead, such as Australia, the US or the UK.
AI answers are location-conditioned: the same question returns different brands in different places, so a single prompt tracked in one location undercounts your real exposure.
Worked examples
Local bathroom renovator - 4 services × 6 service areas, checked weekly across 4 engines. Recommended plan lands around 120–240 prompts, with geo-conditioned samples like "bathroom renovations Dural" and roughly 2,880 engine checks a month.
SaaS AEO platform - 4 buyer segments across 3 markets with 5 competitors, checked weekly across 5 engines. Recommended plan lands around 300–750 prompts, with comparison and "alternatives to" samples.
Ecommerce store - product categories × buying stages × 2 markets. Category and buying-stage coverage pushes recommended plans into the hundreds even for a single region.
